Tips for Selling Items at Consignment Sales

Really, there is so much to tell a consigning newbie about how to consign that I'm going to break this up into parts. But here are a few tips to make selling a bit easier.

  • Try to find multiple sales each season. If you can work them out so that you don't re-tag the second one, all the better. I consign in one that uses regular cardstock tags, then I take my left-overs to another sale that uses barcode stickers. So, all I have to do is put the sticker at the bottom of the tag and they are ready to go. Two for the work of one!
  • Cardstock tags for consignment salesInstead of index cards, I use 8 1/2 x 11 white cardstock cut into 8 "cards". Since I print mine using a mail merge, this is so much easier than feeding index cards into the printer. I know some sales are sticklers about the cards used, but the ones I participate in don't care. The checkers at the sales cut them all up anyway, so does it really matter if they start out the exact same size?
  • Be sure all of your clothing items are stain-free and have all buttons, zippers, and the like intact. See the section on Stain Removal if you need some help.

We all have our own way of doing things - some people like to sit in front of the TV and write out their tags, some (me!) do a mail merge - but if you've never consigned and don't know where to even begin, take a look at my process below.
